The Toddler Travel Experiment: A Weekend in Turkey
As a parent of two young children, I often find myself questioning the sanity of my travel plans. So, when I decided to embark on a long weekend trip to Turkey with my toddlers, I couldn't help but wonder: was it worth the effort?
Parenthood, especially in the toddler years, is a relentless marathon of exhaustion. The constant demands, the sleepless nights, and the never-ending to-do lists can leave you feeling like a mere shadow of your former self. In the past eight months, my family has endured a series of life events that would challenge even the most resilient among us: moving house, multiple surgeries, and, of course, the never-ending task of keeping tiny humans alive and thriving.
In the midst of this chaos, my partner and I decided we deserved a break. But with limited time and a desire to avoid the complexities of certain regions, we settled on a long weekend getaway to Turkey.
Surviving the Journey
Traveling with toddlers is an art form, and one that often requires strategic planning. We opted for an early flight, hoping to minimize disruptions and maximize our time away. The security scanners at Gatwick were a godsend, streamlining the process and allowing us to keep our electronics and liquids intact.
The flight itself was a mixed bag. While my four-year-old handled it like a pro, my two-year-old refused to nap, opting instead for hyperactivity. Thankfully, the flight was filled with fellow parents and their young ones, creating a sense of solidarity in our shared struggle.
Choosing the Right Accommodation
When traveling with young children, the choice of accommodation is crucial. I've learned that it's essential to prioritize your own sanity and not succumb to the pressure of sightseeing. In my pre-parenthood life, I would have scoffed at the idea of visiting a country without exploring its cultural offerings. But with toddlers in tow, I embraced the all-inclusive resort, prioritizing stunning scenery and ample activities.
XO Cape Arnna, our chosen resort, proved to be a wise decision. It offered a delightful blend of entertainment for the kids and relaxation for the adults. From the mouth-watering buffet to the elegant a la carte restaurants, the dining options were diverse and satisfying. The resort's adults-only areas, complete with a pool, bar, restaurant, gym, and spa, provided a much-needed sanctuary for parents.
Keeping the Kids Entertained
The resort's facilities were a hit with my children. From the waterpark and splash pad to the beach and slides, there was no shortage of excitement. The teepee in our room, the trapeze, and the hidden Flamingo Beach with its shallow waters and toddler play area were all delightful surprises.
However, I must admit that the kids' club left me feeling a bit deflated. While well-equipped, the lack of supervision and the abundance of video games were concerning. In my opinion, a kids' club should offer more than just screen time; it should provide engaging activities and opportunities for social interaction.
Navigating Time Differences
One of the challenges of traveling with young children is managing their sleep schedules. Interestingly, the resort's late opening hours for a la carte restaurants (7 pm) aligned perfectly with the time difference between Turkey and the UK. This allowed us to maintain our children's British bedtime routine, ensuring they were well-rested for the next day's adventures.
The Verdict
Despite my initial doubts, the long weekend in Turkey proved to be a success. The all-inclusive resort provided the perfect balance of entertainment and relaxation, allowing us to recharge without feeling bored. It was a much-needed respite from the daily grind, even if only for a fleeting moment.
In my experience, traveling with toddlers requires a delicate balance of planning and flexibility. It's about creating memories, embracing new experiences, and finding moments of peace amidst the chaos. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, for us, it was a journey worth taking.
